5v5 Flag Football Rules

5v5 Flag Football $50/Team

This is a “contact minimized” league. Physical contact that is inadvertent or marginal will occur throughout the game. However, aggressive behavior (e.g. body tackles, dropping of shoulders, pushing, unintended infractions if habitual, blocking, flag guarding etc.) will result in penalties (including ejections). Every player, on and off the field, is to uphold respect for other players. Flags are to be returned to respective player.

1. Number of Players.

Teams may field up to 5 players and a maximum of 7 players per team. A team must have 4 players available at game time or that team will be disqualified. Only players on roster are allowed to participate in play.

2.
Game Time

Teams will play 25 minutes total with a running clock. The clock will only stop during time outs, referee conferences, and injuries.

3.
Scoring.

All touchdowns in the recreational and competitive leagues will count as 6-points. There is one point and two point conversion.

4.
Number of Downs.

Each team has four attempts (“downs”) to move the ball past the next marker to obtain a First Down or Goal. First Down occurs when the player crosses the closest marker from where the ball was spotted on the initial First Down. A loss of yardage behind the marker does not reset the number of downs.

5. Passes.

All forward passes must be behind the line of scrimmage. You are allowed to do one backwards lateral then a forward pass per play (as long as both players have not crossed the line of scrimmage. “Hand-offs” are not allowed.

6.
Rushing.

No Count – Defensive rushers may not line up at the line of scrimmage. Rushers must start 7yd away from the line of scrimmage as marked by the referee. If the quarterback does a hard count and rusher jumps the line then the rusher has to come back to the 7yd marker and then engage the quarterback. The quarterback is not allowed to rush pass the line of scrimmage under any circumstances.

7.
Blocking.

There will be no tolerance for block or flag guarding. Results will be a 5yd penalty at the spot of the foul.

8.
Tackles.

A player is “tackled” once a flag belt (or any portion of the belt) is pulled. If a flag (or any portion of the belt) falls off the operative player without any prior contact by a defenseman, then a one-hand touch will result in a “tackle”.

9.
Possession.

Receivers need only one foot in-bounds with clear possession of the ball (no bobbling) to be considered a catch. Pass interference will be a 10yd penalty.

10.
Fumbles.

Play is stopped on all fumbles and dropped laterals. The ball will be set at the location of the dropped ball, not the original line of scrimmage. “Stripping” or “ripping” of the football is not allowed.

11.
Interceptions.

All interceptions can be returned and could result in a touchdown. The ball will be set where the ball is returned.

12.
Time Outs.

Teams have 2 time-outs per game that may be used at any time of the game.

13. Safety.

A safety will be rewarded 1pts and change of ball possession.
